RCA Residency
Rochester Square is collaborating with the Royal College of Art offering a residency program 2020-21 for students from the Sculpture Department. The project has both practical and technical teaching and learning aims, giving the students the opportunity to develop a project considering the sculpture garden in a wider sense.
The students taking part are provided with a space for developing their skills, research and professional practice experience (via the ceramics facilities, outdoor garden and grounds) and with the support of Rochester Square they can make their own artwork, organise public workshops, events and join its collaborative community.
Spring 2021
RCA graduate Jakob Rava joined us at Rochester Square throughout May and June 2021 to work on his project titled Gerten. The project draws on a series of objects which were realised during a residency at the Scottish sculpture workshops in 2017.
As part of the residency Jakob hosted a workshop, inviting participants to share the process of forming objects that will become part of a temporary installation in the garden. The ceramic objects were made from extruded clay which was shaped by participants using the restricted form vocabulary of a specific type of fencing found commonly in the UK.
Autumn 2020
Alejandro Villa and Abigail Burt developed their project together at RS as part of RCA Residency program. Working around the garden, they organised a series of workshops bringing different communities together and encouraging them to listen, understand and be inspired by nature and translate these ideas into clay.
As part of their residency, Alejandro and Abigail also organised a workshop for children for Camden Square Play Centre.
We will celebrate the end of the residencies on Wednesday 30 June 2021 with an open exhibition in our garden space. More details will be announced soon.
